Did you know that corded window coverings are one of the top five hidden hazards in American homes? Sadly, infants and children die each year by accidentally strangling themselves while playing with window cords.
For this reason, The Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) have declared October as Window Cord Safety Month to make people aware of the danger that window cords can pose to young children and pets, educate them on safer options and ask them to take action during the month of October to prevent any more precious lives from being lost.
Make sure your window are safe!
CPSC recommends that only cordless window coverings or coverings with inaccessible cords be used in homes with young children, and we would add that every home should take this precaution to prevent hazard of visiting children in the home. Please check your windows today and make sure that all shades, blinds and draperies in your home do not have cords that are within the reach of a child.
The Window Covering Safety Council asks parents and caregivers to go down this list and make any necessary changes to ensure the safety of your child:
Move all furniture, cribs, beds and climbable surfaces away from windows.
Keep all window cords well out of the reach of children.
Install only cordless window coverings in homes with young children and/or replace systems with cordes.
If a corded system remains in the home, make sure tasseled pull cords are as short as possible.
Continuous-loop pull cords on draperies and vertical blinds should be pulled tight and anchored to the floor or wall.
Be sure cord stops are properly installed and adjusted to limit inner-cord movement.
While dangerous models are still on the market, there are now child-proof, adjustable window coverings made without cords that can be purchased and installed relatively cheaply.
